“The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost” (1 Timothy 1:15 ESV).

What is Christmas all about? Giving? Being home with family? Peace on earth and good will towards men? The truth is that Christmas is about all of that and so much more. Christmas is about God the Son coming into the world and taking on flesh. God the Son became the God-man by becoming a baby. He didn’t stop being God, but now He was truly God and truly man… On that first Christmas over 2,000 years ago, He came to earth, and became flesh (the incarnation); but He had a purpose in coming.

As God’s Word says above, Jesus came into the world to save sinners. God came and became the God-man so that He could live and die in the place of man, and rise again so that all who would turn from their sin and trust in Him would be saved. This is what 1 Timothy 1:15 is telling us, and as Paul says there, this is a trustworthy saying deserving of full acceptance; and that’s because Jesus is a trustworthy Savior deserving of full acceptance. And full acceptance is true repentance and faith.

But, as Paul does with himself here, if we are to fully accept Jesus as Savior we must fully accept that we are sinners in desperate need of a Savior. Paul calls himself the foremost of sinners; and you might say, “Well that’s fine for Paul, but I’m not the foremost… I’m not the worst of sinners.” Well, Paul wasn’t really either; but Paul was the worst sinner he knew because he knew himself better than he knew anyone else. And that should be true for us as well. We must understand that we are the worst sinner we know… Just consider all of the horrible things that go through your mind that you never say or act on. We are sinners; and if we would accept Christ we must accept that as well.

Here we see that Jesus and His saving work are a gift; but the person and work of Christ is a gift only meant for sinners. He came and gave Himself to save sinners. He came and gave Himself to bring peace and good will between God and man. He came to bring us home to God and into God’s family. So it’s in Christ that we find the true meaning of Christmas. May we accept it, and more importantly, may we accept Him…

I am nothing; Christ is all!
