PASTOR NICK’S WEEKLY DEVOTION 10/21/2018

Hebrews 13:7 says, “Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith” (ESV). This verse alone is reason enough for us to care about church history; but we should understand that church history is our family history, and therefore we should care greatly about our brothers and sisters who went before us.

The month of October is the anniversary month of the Protestant Reformation. When we think about the Reformation most of us probably think about the German reformer Martin Luther, or the French reformer John Calvin, but there were some great English reformers as well… Two of those English Reformers were Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley…

Latimer was once a Catholic Priest, until one day a Protestant Reformer named Thomas Bilney went into confession with Latimer, and he began to confess the gospel and explain salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone  (If you ever find yourself in a Catholic confessional I encourage you to do the same thing Mr. Bilney did…)… Latimer soon came to faith, and at great risk to himself, he became a part of the Protestant Reformation…

Latimer’s life was completely transformed by the gospel, and so he gave his life for the advancement of the gospel… He and his friend Ridley were eventually arrested and condemned to death for preaching the gospel… When the time came for them to be burned at the stake Latimer told Ridley, “Be of good comfort, Master Ridley, and play the man; we shall this day light such a candle, by God’s grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out.” And indeed they did… If they didn’t die for the cause of the gospel there’s a good chance that we would not be Christians today. But they did; God gave them conviction and courage, and the light of the gospel kept burning, and burns still… May we all be of such conviction and courage… May we die to self, forsake our fear, and live for Christ…

I am nothing; Christ is all!
