PASTOR NICK’S WEEKLY DEVOTION 10/7/2018

What would cause someone to be willing to suffer the loss of all things for Christ? Well, what do we see in Scripture? In Philippians Paul says, “it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:20-21 ESV). Paul was more concerned with honoring Christ than living or dying. He says that to die would actually be gain. To give up everything, even his life, would be gain. Why? How? Well, in Philippians 1:23 Paul says that his desire is to depart and be with Jesus, for that is far better… Better than what? Better than everything…

Paul teaches us that there is nothing more valuable, nothing more enjoyable than Jesus. He said in Philippians 3:8, “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ” (ESV). Did you catch that? The worth and value of knowing Jesus surpasses everything… In fact, everything else is as rubbish in comparison…

So, what would cause someone to be willing to suffer the loss of all things for Christ? The answer is Christ Himself… Jesus is altogether lovely… He is holy and perfectly glorious in every way… He is good in every way… In fact He is what good ultimately is… He is who we were created for… Therefore, He is worth giving up everything for, because no matter what we may give up, if we get Him we gain

No doubt, being a Christian means denying self, fighting sin, going against the ways of the world and trusting and obeying God and His Word, no matter how hard that may be… But, ultimately we sacrifice nothing and gain everything, because what little we sacrifice pales in comparison to the surpassing worth of our Lord and Savior, King Jesus. So let His greatness, His beauty, His worth and value fuel your life of obedience to Him. Whatever we may give up, whatever we may lose, or whatever this world may offer us, it does not compare with Jesus. Jesus is better than everything, so be willing to count it all as loss for His sake…

I am nothing; Christ is all!
