PASTOR NICK’S WEEKLY DEVOTION 11/4/2018

In 1 Corinthians 15:14 Paul says, “if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain” (ESV)… And then he goes on in 1 Corinthians 15:32 to say, “If the dead are not raised, ‘Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die’” (ESV). Paul tied the truth of Jesus’ resurrection directly to our resurrection… If Jesus lives so shall we… But notice how He banks everything on the truth of the resurrection: if the resurrection isn’t true, Paul essential says, we’re wasting our lives, and we should just go do what everyone else is doing—eat and drink, for tomorrow we die…

Do you think about the resurrection like this? Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:19, “If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied” (ESV). Is the resurrection that crucial to your life as a Christian that you feel if it’s not true that you are to be pitied because of how you are wasting your life? For Paul this was completely true… Paul’s life only made sense if the resurrection is true. He literally poured out his life for the fame of Christ and the eternal good of God’s people… He suffered some of the worst things imaginable for the sake of the gospel… And he did all of this because he truly believed that Jesus is alive, and that he will live forever with Jesus in perfect joy… He truly believed that, “to live is Christ, and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21 ESV).

What Paul is telling us in 1 Corinthians 15 is that, like him, our lives as Christians should only make sense because of the resurrection… The truth of the resurrection should have such a massive impact on our lives that we make no sense to the world… Our lives should proclaim to the world around us that Jesus is alive. We should be living in such a way that if the resurrection isn’t real than we are wasting our lives… But it is real… Jesus is alive!!! And because He lives so shall we… Therefore it only makes sense that we should pour out our lives for Jesus’ sake… So, don’t just recognize the resurrection as a crucial doctrine, but bank everything on it, and let Jesus and His resurrection transform your life…

I am nothing; Christ is all!
