PASTOR NICK’S WEEKLY DEVOTION 9/16/2018

God’s Word says, “Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall” (1 Corinthians 11:12 ESV). Oh how Peter needed to hear this… Peter had a tendency to be arrogant and self-confident. Once when Jesus was telling the disciples that He was going to the cross, Peter stepped forward and said, “I will lay down my life for you” (John 13:37 ESV). But that was far from the truth; Jesus responded to him and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times” (John 13:38 ESV)…

Of course, we know that Peter did indeed deny Christ three times… Instead of laying down his life for Jesus, he did whatever he had to to keep it. He must’ve forgot Jesus’ words, “whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it” (Mark 8:35 ESV). From swinging a sword, to openly denying Jesus three times, it was all too obvious, that Peter cared far too much about himself to lay down his life for Jesus’ sake… He thought that he had the strength to follow Jesus come what may; but he was thinking about the Christian life all wrong.

You see, our strength means nothing in the Christian life; what counts is deliberate dependency on God. In other words, true strength actually comes through weakness. The world says weakness is something to be ashamed of… But Jesus says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9 ESV)… We cannot muster up the strength to follow and stay faithful to Christ in and of ourselves… We need grace…

Peter, in his pride, thought that Jesus needed him. And when we are arrogant and self-confident we are just the same way… But Jesus doesn’t need us, we need Jesus… Turning to Him, looking to Him, and depending on Him is how we keep from falling. So, take heed lest you fall…

I am nothing; Christ is all!
