PASTOR NICK’S WEEKLY DEVOTION 1/12/2020

“Whoever is wise, let him understand these things; whoever is discerning, let him know them; for the ways of the Lord are right, and the upright walk in them, but transgressors stumble in them” (Hosea 14:9 ESV).

We live in a broken world… of that there is no doubt… Evil, sin, disease, suffering, pain, and death are all around us. And when we see it, when we feel it something within us cries out, “This isn’t right!” Even the self-professed atheist hates cancer and mourns over death; and that’s because as people created in the image of God we know by nature that the way things are aren’t the way they are supposed to be… This world is not right!

But, that doesn’t mean that God and His ways are not right, though He is completely sovereign, and ordains all that comes to pass. You see, when God created all things He looked at His creation and saw that it was good… And indeed it was good… But His creation turned on Him. First Satan and the angels who followed him, and then Satan got mankind to follow him in his rebellion against God. Adam and Eve believed the lies of Satan and sinned against God, and ever since we have followed in their footsteps. And it is our sin that broke everything. Scripture says, “sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned” (Romans 5:12). In other words, this world is broken because we are broken… It indeed is not right… But God is…

You see, God is so good and so sovereign that what we mean for evil God ordains for good (Genesis 50:20). Indeed, God works all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). And He does indeed have a divine purpose, a good purpose for all things. And this brings great comfort to God’s people, encouraging them to joyfully walk in the ways of the Lord; but the wicked, the lost stumble over such things. So can you say with Hosea, “the ways of the Lord are right”? Can you sing the words of that old hymn, “Whate’er my God ordains is right, Here shall my stand be taken; Though sorrow, need, or death be mine, Yet I am not forsaken. My Father’s care is round me there; He holds me that I shall not fall; And so to Him I leave it all, And so to Him I leave it all.”? I pray you can… For in this broken world, the good sovereignty of God is the only real pillow upon which to rest your head…

I am nothing; Christ is all!
