PASTOR NICK’S WEEKLY DEVOTION 1/19/2020

“When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory” (Colossians 3:4 ESV).

Oh, that we would take these words, these glorious words to heart… Do you know this Christian? Do you believe this? Do you live this? If you are a Christian Christ is your life. As the supreme Lord of the universe, “by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:15-17 ESV). So, in a very real sense, anyone who is alive, only has life because of Jesus. Indeed, “he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything” (Acts 17:25b ESV). But, just because you are alive doesn’t mean that you have life in Christ.

The life that is Christ is the life that has been given by the Spirit of Christ, it is the life that is dead to sin and alive to the glory of Christ, it is the life that is centered on Christ, it is the life that is devoted to Christ, it is the life that is lived in joy and gratitude for the righteousness of Christ, it is the life that treasures and praises the person and work of Christ in all things. As Augustine once said, “Jesus Christ is not valued at all until He is valued above all.” And that’s the idea here: Jesus is our life when He is our all and all, when He is our greatest passion and delight…

And why shouldn’t Jesus be our greatest passion and delight? Look at all the He is for us and all that He has done and will do for us. He, God in the flesh, so loved us that He lived, died, and rose again to save us. By the Spirit He caused us to be born again and gave us the faith to trust in Him and be united to Him, and clothed in His righteousness—saving us from sin, death, and wrath… But, that’s not all. He doesn’t just save us and then leave us be… No! It says, when He appears we will be with Him in glory… We will be with Him! In glory!!! What amazing news! What amazing grace! Jesus, the supreme Lord of the universe wants us with Him, and has done all to make sure that happens. And we will indeed be with Him in glory, in perfect joy for all eternity, if indeed He is our life now. So, though we must die to self if we are to live with Christ, whatever we give up doesn’t matter, because it doesn’t compare to eternal glory with Christ. And that is what we’re promised. So marvel, and take this to heart.

I am nothing; Christ is all!
