“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (1 John 4:7-8 ESV).
Let your heart feel the weight of that word: beloved… As Christians we know God because we have be born of God, all because we are loved by God. The God who is love has set His love on us. And we see that love most fundamentally in the person and work of Jesus Christ. “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8 ESV). And in His love He makes us alive, opens our eyes to this great love, grants us repentance and faith, and transforms us from children of wrath into beloved children. Because our faith is in the true Beloved One, we are counted as beloved.
This new reality of God’s love and our new identity as God’s beloved children should transform our lives. The love of God should so grip us and transform us that we become loving… We love God and love people. In fact, we are commanded to love one another; if we don’t love one another, if we don’t love God’s people it shows that we don’t know God. We must love God’s people, and if we love Jesus we will love His bride the church, we will love His people. And part of the reason this is a must is because it displays our love for Him.
As we sacrificially love one another, giving of our time, talent, and treasure, Christ is glorified because it displays that He is our all and all. And because of who He is and how He loves us, that’s exactly what He should be.
I am nothing; Christ is all!
