PASTOR NICK’S WEEKLY DEVOTION 2/16/2020

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: The Lord is our righteousness’” (Jeremiah 23:5-6 ESV).

The righteous Branch of David, the great and wise King who executes justice and righteousness is a Savior. He saves His people by who He is and what He does. This can be seen by the name He’s given here: “The Lord is our righteousness.” This is of course speaking of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, our righteousness… As 2 Corinthians 5:21 tells us, “For our sake he (God the Father) made him (Jesus) to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (ESV). Jesus is the Lord, and the Lord is our righteousness.

The Scottish pastor, Robert Murray McCheyne (1813-1843), wrote a poem called Jehovah Tsidkenu, which in Hebrew means the Lord our righteousness. In it he says:

When free grace awoke me, by light from on high,

Then legal fears shook me, I trembled to die;

No refuge, no safety in self could I see

Jehovah Tsidkenu my Saviour must be.

My terrors all vanished before the sweet name;

My guilty fears banished, with boldness I came

To drink at the fountain, life giving and free

Jehovah Tsidkenu is all things to me.

Friends, in this great truth, in this amazing grace lies our all in all: “The Lord is our righteousness.” Jesus is everything we have failed to be, and in His great love He joyfully gives us all that He is—He covers us with His perfect righteousness. Because of the person and work of Jesus and our union with Him by faith, we are declared, not merely forgiven, but righteous… Hallelujah! What a Savior!!!

I am nothing; Christ is all!
