“but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8 ESV).
Romans 5:8 is near and dear to my heart. Thanks to my wife, it actually hangs above our fireplace in our living room. My wife had that done because she knows this verse is everything to me; but, I think it should be everything to all Christians… This verse should amazes us all and cause our hearts to sing.
When Charles Wesley began to grasp the truth of Romans 5:8 it really did cause his heart to sing. In amazement of the truth found in this verse, he wrote a hymn called And Can It Be. In that hymn he says,
Long my imprisoned spirit lay,
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light
My chains fell off, my heart was free
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee
Amazing love! How can it be
That Thou, my God shouldst die for me?
And you see, when we begin to grasp how amazing God’s love is, and that He loves us… that He shows His love for us by sending Jesus to die for us… And that Jesus, God the Son, loved us and gave Himself for us (Ephesians 5:2)… And He gave Himself for us, He died for us at our worst. “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners…” even the worst of sinners (1 Timothy 1:15 ESV). We didn’t earn His love; we can’t earn His love. We are sinners who only deserve death and hell, and yet God loves us. And God shows His love for us by dying for us. “Amazing love! How can it be?…”
I don’t know about you, but when I look in the mirror I am utterly baffled as to why or how God could love me. Yet He does! And the proof of that love is seen at the cross. So when you find yourself all too aware of your sinfulness, and find yourself doubting God’s love for you, look to the cross, look to Jesus, look to Romans 5:8 and be amazed by amazing love.
I am nothing; Christ is all!
