1 Corinthians 15:17-19 (ESV)

And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.

In Ephesians 2:1-3 Paul tells us that everyone outside of Christ is dead in their trespasses and sins; by birth we are all spiritually dead, dead to God, enslaved to sin, following the world, the devil, and the flesh, and destined for physical death, and eternal death—eternal wrath… As decedents of Adam we are sons of disobedience—rebels by nature—without God and without hope in this world, and utterly helpless to do anything to improve our spiritual lot. We are not able to contribute anything to our salvation other than the sin that makes it necessary. And it’s not as if we kind of need saving; like if God would just throw us a life raft we could grab ahold of it and be kept from drowning… No! We have already drowned! In our sin we are lying lifeless on the bottom of the sea. That’s what Ephesians 2:1 says: we are DEAD… and dead people can’t do anything.

But, after these verses that layout how bad our sinful condition really is we’re told in Ephesians 2:4-5 that because of God’s great love for us and His amazing mercy and grace, He made us alive with Christ. In other words, because Christ has lived the perfect life we have failed to live, because He has died the death we deserve to die and took God’s wrath that we deserve upon Himself upon our cross, and because He rose from the dead on the third day, and now lives never to die again, so too will all of God’s people. By grace, through the power of the Holy Spirit, God makes His people—who were born spiritually dead—alive! He grants us spiritual life and frees us from our bondage to sin, and enables us to follow Jesus instead of the world, the devil, and the flesh.

But that’s not all! Because Jesus lives never to die again, though we die yet shall we live. We now have the sure hope of the resurrection! We will live forever with Christ! This world is not all there is; but if it was, or if Christ was not raise we would be most to be pitied. We would have no hope. We would be dead. But Christ lives, and so do we, and so shall we!

I am nothing; Christ is all!
