PASTOR NICK’S WEEKLY DEVOTION 6/16/2019

“To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things, so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 3:8-10 ESV).

John Stott once pointed out, “If the church is central to God’s purpose, as seen in both history and the gospel, it must surely also be central to our lives. How can we take lightly what God takes so seriously? How dare we push to the perimeter what God has placed at the center?” And that indeed is what we see in the above text. Here we see that God’s chief design in the universe is the public display of His manifold wisdom in and through the church; and by church here God’s Word has in mind local churches, where people are committed to loving the Triune God and loving one another, and helping one another follow Jesus. That’s at the center of God’s purposes for creating the universe…

The church is called out of darkness into the light for a reason; God has a purpose, He has a mission for His church. The church’s mission is to make known the manifold wisdom of God; in other words the church’s mission is to display the glory of God—who He is in all of His beauty and splendor… This happens through holy lives, prayerful dependence, gospel proclamation, and biblical discipling… And this all happens in the context of the church. We display or magnify God’s glory in this world as we covenant together with the local church. We go about our mission together, seeking to show the world that Jesus is better than anything this world could give us or take away from us.

When we think about church we shouldn’t just think about somewhere we go, or even just about some people we know; we should think about who we are… A big part of being the church is gathering and worshipping, but our lives as a whole should revolve around what it means to be the church and to live out the mission of the church… So, is the church at the center of your life, or have you pushed it to the side?…

I am nothing; Christ is all!
